Afternoon, friends. The topic I bring you today is Guang Dong.
As for me, I was born in Shan Tou, grew up in Dong Guan, sometimes live in Shen Zhen, always travel to Guang Zhou, Hong kong, Macau, and every city of Guang Dong, and other provinces and countries next to Guang Dong. I was born and bred in Guang Dong, with the qualification to show you an objective Guang Dong, and to clarify some misunderstandings of you. Thank you for offering me the chance.
First, let’s come to the culture and society of Guang Dong.
As to people:
1: Cantonese are hard-working, especially people in Chao Shan district, because life is nothing but a challenge in the old years.
2: Cantonese are clever, working out any possible ideas to succeed in business and profit from foreigners.
3: Cantonese are humorous, making fun without any disrespect.
As to language:
1: Min-Nan and Cantonese are the two main languages in Guang Dong. The former is complex and difficult, the latter is profound, easy to pronounce but hard to master, totally different from Mandarin Chinese.
2: Cantonese is more and more popular, bringing about Min-Nan to fade out.
As to eating:
1: Cantonese’s eating style is rather an art, with tasty soup, special recipe, and variety of foods.
2: Most of Cantonese favor chicken. But in recent years, some people tend to eat some precious animals. It’s a fact that I have to confess. It’s unkind and undesirable, after all.
But in all, Cantonese are people who know how to earn life and enjoy life.
Second, what about city in Guang Dong?
1: An interesting feature is the character and diversity. Every city is different from each other for sure. Dong Guan is famous for hotels, Shen Zhen for electronics, Zhu Hai for tourism.
2: The second feature is internationalization. It has the closest connection with Hong Kong, Macau, with Taiwanese gethering to invest everywhere in Guang Dong. Dong Guan is a city that is good at holding inhabitation. It’s easy to meet business people from different regions over the world if you get the right place.
3: Lastly, many cities have their own abilities to beautify themselves, building subways and giant gyms. That’s why the Asian Games choose Guan Zhou this year.
So I wish my hometown a big success in such an event.
Third, economy.
1: After the open and reform policy. Guang Dong met an economic spring and undoubtedly become the most important centre of China, with the GDP of 4000 billion, 12% of the whole country. And it provides occupations for nearly 27 million workers, unsurpassable in China.
2: However, 2008 was a hard year for Guang Dong that Cantonese will never forget. The financial crisis, like a monster, overwhelmingly pushed factories and stores to bankrupt one by one, day by day. My family experienced it truly and terribly. My father’s factory had to be shut down and pay debts. One day, to prepare for a topical economic speech, I was doing an investigation in one shopping street. There were 10 stores, with 4 closed and seeking buyers.
3: But we should look forward. Such a monster is also a good teacher, telling that it’s time to change and upgrade. There were two public advertisements impressive to me. One read:”Hold on and stand up, Guang Dong.” The other read:”Spare the cage for stronger birds.”
Guang Dong learned so, and it did so.
Finally, what I am to emphasize most is Guang Dong Spirit—opening and exploring. We are brave enough to meet any changes and differences from the outside. And whether in hard time or easy time, we never stop trying to work out new ideas to stand up and grow stronger. This is the most important and key feature of Guang Dong. It’s also the reason why Mr. Deng made a choice of Guang Dong.
In the end, as a coin has two sides, every province and every city is also a combination of advantages and disadvantages, weak points and shining points. Guang Dong is strong, but also growing. But more importantly, Iam confident about him.
Any question? You are welcome.
Thank you. Thank you so much.
